Editorial Review for Porter and Frye – by Molly Priesmeyer
In Short
When local legend Steven Brown left his post as head chef at Café Levain, foodies were abuzz about where he'd end up. Enter Porter and Fye, an uber-chic, dressed-up and luxurious restaurant of Brown's own in Hotel Ivy. Brown creates dishes that are as fancy and refined as the restaurant itself: prawns accessorized with pear ravioli; sea scallops jeweled with passion fruit; and walleye outfitted with green apple and parmesan. Every detail here is polished till it glows, and every dish reflects Brown's vision, which is to turn eating into an inspired, artful experience.

ExtrasThe imported wine list here is extensive, but it doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg to try out. Glasses are as little as $5 for a three-oz. pour. Pay a little extra and enjoy Porter and Frye's hand-selected vintages.

Supposed to be good from what we heard but did not enjoy the service or food. Stayed in hotel for conference and was not happy.

My wife and I decided to make it a special night out for our anniversary, so we reserved a table and planned to stay overnight in Hotel Ivy. The hotel was great. As close to 5-star as you can get for a Starwood hotel (bathrobes, slippers, iced champagne (they knew it was our anniversary), flat-screen TV, etc). Dinner, with our son and his girlfriend, also memorable. The room was a little "Chambers-like"; downstairs, modern art, a little noisy. I had a great hot potato salad (I know it sounds boring, but it was really good) and lamb. Others at the table had ribeye, walleye, vegetarian gnocchi - all flavorful and appropriate sized portions. Great drink list too. Only detraction was the service was a little inattentive at first, but rapidly picked up as the food was served. Pleasant surprise that the price was not out of sight - about $60 per person with drinks, salads, main course, shared desert, and tip. The real surprise was the breakfast the next morning. Breakfast is served upstairs, in a sunnier room. There is a "buffet" with sliced salmon, bagels, fresh fruit, pastries, etc. You can also order off the menu and still partake in the buffet (or not). My wife had pancakes, I had egg-white and tofu scramble. This is one of the better breakfasts downtown, I honestly don't know why people line up for Hell's Kitchen, when this place was empty. The food quality, service, and preparation were much better at Hotel Ivy/Porter & Frye for breakfast than almost any other place we've been downtown.
Pros: Food quality and preparation
Cons: Service a little inattentive and noisy room
